History of H J Chard & Sons...

The firm traces its history to 1903, although it has traded from the Feeder Road site only since 1926. Originally Chard Brothers, its main activity was house building and even today, local estate agents use the term "Chard built house" as a badge of quality in descriptions of homes in the Knowle area built before the Second World War. Later known as H J Chard, the emphasis switched to mortar manufacture, and this continues to the present day. The in-house maintence of the plant also expanded in the 1930s into a Mechanical Engineering work shop, which during the Second World War dominated the business as sub contract machinists to the armament trade. These two main components of the business have complimented each other over the years.

After the Second World War, the mechanical engineering side of the company switched to the manufacture and repair of propshafts for the Motor Trade. The ability to repair and balance a complete range of propshafts is a facility otherwise unavailable in the South West to this day.

The building side has supplied a wide range of bulding materials for over 100 years. Our extensive clientele includes the National Trust, English Heritage and a host of building contractors specialising in the conservation of historic buildings.
